SUMMARY:Thomistic Institute - Dr Robert McNamara
DESCRIPTION:On Monday 4th November\, the Oxford Thomistic Institute will be hosting Dr Robert McNamara\, of the Franciscan University of Steubenville\, to speak on Thomistic Personalism: A Steinian Perspective. \nThe lecture will begin at 7.30pm in the Aula at Blackfriars\, and will be followed by refreshments. All are welcome. \nAbstract\nReality is divided by a fundamental dichotomy separating persons and (mere) things. It is a metaphysical distinction with defined ethical import\, both of which are captured well by Thomas Aquinas when he concludes that the person is ‘that which is most perfect in all nature.’ Edith Stein takes up this objective centrality and reintroduces what she calls an ‘Augustinian way’ of philosophizing\, by attending to personal subjectivity via the phenomenological mode of investigation. The result is a form of Thomistic personalism that is attentive both to the substantiality of the person and to the subjectivity of the person\, a personalism that avoids the many problems emerging from the modern ‘turn to the subject’ while also judiciously encompassing the genuine insights of this ‘Copernican revolution.’ I propose that only such a personalism can provide an anthropology fitting for the needs of the contemporary era\, and indeed adequate to the singular being\, nature\, and life of the human person. \nThis lecture is free and open to the public. \n \nAbout the speaker\nDr. Robert McNamara is an associate professor of philosophy at Franciscan University of Steubenville\, associate series editor of Edith Stein Studies\, associate scholar of the Hildebrand Project\, associate member of faculty at the International Theological Institute and the Maryvale Institute\, and a founding member of the Aquinas Institute of Ireland. Robert researches anthropological and metaphysical questions in medieval and phenomenological thinkers\, especially as both bear reference to philosophical personalism. He has studied physics and computing\, philosophy and theology\, and received his Ph.D. for research in the thought of Edith Stein and Thomas Aquinas. Robert is originally from Galway\, Ireland and now lives in Steubenville\, Ohio (though currently residing in Gaming\, Austria) with his wife\, Caroline\, and their four children\, Vivian\, John\, Catherine\, and Oran.

SUMMARY:Thomistic Institute - Fr Khaled Anatolios
DESCRIPTION:On Monday 21st October\, the Oxford Thomistic Institute will be hosting Fr Khaled Anatolios\, of the University of Notre Dame\, to speak on: What does it mean to say that Jesus is Lord? The Witness of Nicaea. \nThe lecture will begin at 7.30pm in the Aula at Blackfriars\, and will be followed by refreshments. All are welcome. \nAbstract\nWhile there is a common inclination among contemporary Christians to locate the intelligibility of Trinitarian doctrine in creaturely analogies of three-in-oneness\, it is more profitable to seek that intelligibility as flowing out of a certain conception of the lordship of Christ. Fr. Khaled Anatolios will argue that the Nicene debates revolved around two rival interpretations of the lordship of Christ. To assent to the Nicene creed involves understanding how the Nicene interpretation of the lordship of Christ can be affirmed and enacted by Christ’s disciples in today’s world. \nThis lecture is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Aquinas Group
DESCRIPTION:The Blackfriars Aquinas Group is a reading group for young adults (18-35) to enrich their spiritual and intellectual lives by studying the writings of St Thomas Aquinas. This term we will look at the topic of Christology – the study of Jesus Christ\, the incarnate Word\, who is true God and true man. \nThe foundational and perhaps most outrageous claim of Christianity is that God chose to take on human flesh\, born from the womb of a virgin in a stable at Bethlehem. How can God\, the creator of all that is\, become a created human being? Was Jesus really God? Or\, we might ask\, was Jesus really human? And how does the Incarnation save us? Join us this term as we explore these questions with the help of Aquinas’ Summa Theologiae. We will begin with a couple of introductory sessions\, looking at the Christology of the New Testament and the patristics\, before turning to St Thomas. \nEach session will begin with a talk\, followed by time for questions and discussion. No prior knowledge or familiarity with St Thomas is expected.

SUMMARY:Thomistic Institute - Prof Marianne Schlosser
DESCRIPTION:On Monday 13th May\, the Oxford Thomistic Institute will be hosting Professor Marianne Schlosser\, of the University of Vienna\, to give a lecture entitled: “A friend particularly near to me”: St Bonaventure’s influence on the theology of Joseph Ratzinger. The lecture will begin at 7.30pm in the aula\, and will be followed by refreshments. All are welcome. \nAbstract: Joseph Ratzinger was convinced that “behind every great theologian there is a saint“ in the background. If this is true\, there might be several saints behind Ratzinger himself\, but one of his “particularly dear friends” is Bonaventure of Bagnoregio. The friendship began with Ratzinger’s habilitation thesis (completed in 1955)\, that focused on Bonaventure’s conception of revelation\, on metaphysics and salvation history. Ratzinger not only intended a medieval research study\, but first of all a contribution to fundamental theological questions. He made an important contribution to the understanding of Bonaventure\, on the one hand\, and on the other\, the Seraphic doctor’s thoughts had a great influence on his own theological work\, such as his commentary on Dei Verbum or his concept of theological science. The continuing relevance of Bonaventure was highlighted by Pope Benedict XVI in particular in his catecheses (2010)\, describing Bonaventure’s profile (and obviously his own ideal): prayer and intellectual endeavour – instead of being a “manager”; reason and faith to search of theological insight; stability and dynamism as a minister of the Church; the virtue of hope rather than belief in a utopia; and non-voluntaristic ‘primacy of love’: wisdom and holiness.

SUMMARY:Thomistic Institute - Fr Gregory Pine OP
DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday 30th April\, the Oxford Thomistic Institute will host Fr Gregory Pine OP to speak on: He Lived Our Life: The Mysteries of Christ in the Story of Salvation. The lecture will begin at 7.30pm in the aula\, and will be followed by refreshments. All are welcome. \nAbstract: St. Thomas Aquinas insists that all of the deeds and sufferings of Christ save. With our tendency to focus on the passion\, death\, and resurrection (and\, justly so!)\, it’s not always easy to see what Christ’s life\, in its integrity\, offers to mankind. In this lecture\, Fr. Gregory Pine will exposit how the mysteries of the life of Christ furnish the saving shape of divinized life.

SUMMARY:Thomistic Institute - Prof John Haldane - Immaterial Mind
DESCRIPTION:On Monday 19th February\, the Thomistic Institute will be hosting Prof John Haldane to speak on: \nThe Immaterial Mind and the Immortal Soul \nThe lecture will be in the aula at 7.30pm\, and will be followed by refreshments. All are welcome! \nAbstract: Beginning in the late 1950s\, and with a few exceptions\, anglophone philosophers began to adopt one of two views about the nature of mind. Materialism (the mind is the brain) or Behaviourism (talk of mind is to be interpreted in terms of bodily behaviour). These views were qualified\, refined\, revised but in general the prevailing orthodoxies reject the idea of immateriality and certainly that of an immortal soul. Even so the trajectory of philosophical thinking has remained quite divergent. This lecture will review some of these issues and turn to consideration of two lines of thought that claim to be different from those mentioned\, both linked to the thought of Wittgenstein. That of Strawson\, that Persons area special kind of subject\, and that (or those) of Anscombe and Wittgenstein. The special interest of the latter in this context is that they both held to the Christian belief in a future life. This also raises the questions how are their views related to that of Aquinas\, and how should his view be regarded. These various considerations will lead in turn to the broader question is some form of dualism tenable? \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:Thomistic Institute lecture: Exploring Finitude - Weakness\, Suffering\, and Faith in Isaac of Nineveh
DESCRIPTION:A Thomistic Institute lecture by Dr Valentina Duca\, from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem\, on Isaac of Nineveh’s theological anthropology.\n \nThe lecture will take place at 7.30pm at Blackfriars (OX1 3LY)\, will be followed by refreshments\, and all are welcome. \nIsaac of Nineveh (7th c.) is the major exponent of East-Syriac mysticism\, which developed in the Church of the East in the 7th and 8th centuries. Some of his writings were translated into Greek\, and then from Greek into other languages of the Christian world\, including Latin and Slavonic. In this way\, Isaac became a central reference for the Orthodox tradition. This talk explores Isaac’s anthropology\, a central element of his thought. Isaac has\, in fact\, a highly original view on the human condition\, which with great modernity places at the center creatural finitude and the consequences of human exposure to suffering and death. Following a brief introduction to Syriac Christianity and East-Syriac mysticism\, this talk will focus on three elements of Isaac’s anthropology: the human condition of limitation and vulnerability\, the ontological state that he calls “weakness” (mḥiluta)\, and the journey of the relationship with these that he outlines. This will enable us to examine Isaac’s understanding of faith\, which must necessarily confront (even extreme) limitations and suffering. I will conclude with a note on Isaac’s best-known affirmations on universal mercy\, which include love for evil people\, wild animals and demons\, showing how this position is rooted in his anthropological perspective\, which may still be meaningful in a contemporary context. \nValentina Duca is a postdoctoral researcher at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. After obtaining degrees in Theology and the History of Religions\, she specialized in Eastern Christianity at Oxford University\, especially Syriac (MPhil; DPhil). She spent two years at the Catholic University of Leuven\, exploring the influence of the thought of Paul and Mark the Monk on Isaac of Nineveh. Her current project involves the production of a critical edition of hitherto unedited writings of Isaac and an analysis of the concept of experience in East-Syriac mysticism. She recently published a monograph titled “Exploring Finitude”: Weakness and Integrity in Isaac of Nineveh (2023) with Peeters\, Leuven (OLA).

SUMMARY:Blackfriars Aquinas Group
DESCRIPTION:The Aquinas Group offers young adults an opportunity to enrich their spiritual and intellectual lives by studying the writings of St Thomas Aquinas. \nWe meet on Mondays in term at 7pm. We begin with a light meal\, then explore a topic guided by one of the friars\, before finishing by praying Compline (night prayer) together in the priory church. This term we will be looking at St Thomas’ philosophical and theological anthropology\, namely his understanding of the human person. We will look at questions such as the relation between body and soul\, how our thinking and willing shape who we are\, and the nature of moral action. We will also consider more theological themes such as grace\, the theological virtues (faith\, hope\, and charity)\, and what happens to the soul after we die.

DESCRIPTION:Fr Clifton Harris OP is a Dominican Friar of the English Province who is based in Jamaica along with Fr Peter Hunter OP (formerly at Blackfriars\, Oxford). \nFr Clifton’s work includes ministry to one of the most deprived and violent neighbourhoods in Jamaica\, August Town\, where deaths from gun crime are common\, and where people struggle even to get enough food. \nThe Dominicans not only preach the gospel and provide the sacraments\, but are actively involved in social assistance\, organising food for the poor\, and assisting financially and pastorally to aid students in completing their education. \nFr Clifton will speak of this ministry\, offering personal stories of how hope and goodness can overcome adversity. \nThe friars’ apostolic work in the Caribbean (Jamaica and Grenada) is supported by fundraising in Britain under the ‘St Martin’s Missions’ banner. Fr Clifton’s visit aims to spread awareness of this mission and assist this fundraising so as to ensure that the needs of the poor can be met. \nPreview video\n\n \nAll welcome to attend\, free admission. \nFull promotional video + Online donations
