SUMMARY:Thomistic Institute - Prof. Michael Hurley
DESCRIPTION:On Monday 3rd March\, the Oxford Thomistic Institute will be hosting Prof. Michael Hurley\, of Trinity College\, Cambridge\, to speak on The Theological Poetics of Gerard Manley Hopkins SJ. \nThe lecture will begin at 7.30pm in the Aula at Blackfriars\, and will be followed by refreshments. All are welcome. \n \nAbstract\nAn eccentric and obscure Victorian priest\, unremarkable by any worldly measure\, Gerard Manley Hopkins (1844-1889) taught himself to make words sing\, and bite\, and cry out as no writer before him\, or any writer since. This lecture will survey his remarkable achievement as a poet with an emphasis on how his poetics was informed by his religious faith: how\, through the writing of poetry\, he sought to express but also to explore\, understand\, and reconcile the fierce extremes of his spiritual experience and temper\, swinging between ecstasy and despair; how no one would publish him in his lifetime – “dared not”\, he once quipped to this mother – but how\, some thirty years after his death\, his poems suddenly found a devoted readership that has only continued to grow in the subsequent century\, so much so that he is today widely regarded as one of the finest poets in the English language. \nAbout the speaker\nMichael D. Hurley is Professor of Literature and Theology\, and a Fellow and Director of Studies at Trinity College. Educated at the Universities of Cambridge (PhD) and St Andrews (MA)\, he has taught at Cambridge since 2005. He was a Visiting Scholar at Harvard in 2009\, a Visiting Fellow at All Souls College\, Oxford\, in 2021\, and a Visiting Professor at the Sorbonne in 2024. Alongside his academic work\, he frequently gives talks and public lectures on the philosophical and theological questions posed by art and literature. He is a contributor to the BBC Radio 4’s Thought for the Day on the Today programme\, with recent episodes on the topics of beauty\, gratitude\, ancestors\, creation\, relics\, fighting\, euthanasia\, reality\, humour\, discrimination\, and service. More information can be found on his personal website. \n

SUMMARY:Thomistic Institute - Fr Isaac Morales OP
DESCRIPTION:On Monday 17th February\, the Oxford Thomistic Institute will be hosting Fr Isaac Morales OP\, of Providence College\, to speak on The Christ-Shaped Call of Baptism\n \nThe lecture will begin at 7.30pm in the Aula at Blackfriars\, and will be followed by refreshments. All are welcome. \nAbstract\nSt. Gregory Nazianzen once described baptism as “the most beautiful and most magnificent of the gifts of God.” By contrast\, many Christians today rarely give a thought to their baptism. This talk will elucidate the beauty of this sacrament\,which lies at the center of Christ’s mission and of every Christian vocation. By considering some of the biblical images of baptism\, we will come to a better appreciation of the magnificent gift the Lord has given us and its implications for our lives. \n \nAbout the Speaker\nFr. Isaac Morales\, O.P. was born and raised in the northern suburbs of Chicago. He has a BSE in civil engineering from Duke University\, an MTS from Notre Dame\, and a PhD in New Testament\, also from Duke. From 2007-2011 he taught as a layman in the theology department at Marquette University. In 2012 he joined the Order of Preachers (aka\, the Dominicans) and was ordained to the priesthood in May\, 2018. He has taught at Providence since August of the same year. He is the author of The Bible and Baptism: The Fountain of Salvation (Baker Academic Press\, 2022).

SUMMARY:Thomistic Institute - Dr Robert McNamara
DESCRIPTION:On Monday 4th November\, the Oxford Thomistic Institute will be hosting Dr Robert McNamara\, of the Franciscan University of Steubenville\, to speak on Thomistic Personalism: A Steinian Perspective. \nThe lecture will begin at 7.30pm in the Aula at Blackfriars\, and will be followed by refreshments. All are welcome. \nAbstract\nReality is divided by a fundamental dichotomy separating persons and (mere) things. It is a metaphysical distinction with defined ethical import\, both of which are captured well by Thomas Aquinas when he concludes that the person is ‘that which is most perfect in all nature.’ Edith Stein takes up this objective centrality and reintroduces what she calls an ‘Augustinian way’ of philosophizing\, by attending to personal subjectivity via the phenomenological mode of investigation. The result is a form of Thomistic personalism that is attentive both to the substantiality of the person and to the subjectivity of the person\, a personalism that avoids the many problems emerging from the modern ‘turn to the subject’ while also judiciously encompassing the genuine insights of this ‘Copernican revolution.’ I propose that only such a personalism can provide an anthropology fitting for the needs of the contemporary era\, and indeed adequate to the singular being\, nature\, and life of the human person. \nThis lecture is free and open to the public. \n \nAbout the speaker\nDr. Robert McNamara is an associate professor of philosophy at Franciscan University of Steubenville\, associate series editor of Edith Stein Studies\, associate scholar of the Hildebrand Project\, associate member of faculty at the International Theological Institute and the Maryvale Institute\, and a founding member of the Aquinas Institute of Ireland. Robert researches anthropological and metaphysical questions in medieval and phenomenological thinkers\, especially as both bear reference to philosophical personalism. He has studied physics and computing\, philosophy and theology\, and received his Ph.D. for research in the thought of Edith Stein and Thomas Aquinas. Robert is originally from Galway\, Ireland and now lives in Steubenville\, Ohio (though currently residing in Gaming\, Austria) with his wife\, Caroline\, and their four children\, Vivian\, John\, Catherine\, and Oran.

SUMMARY:Thomistic Institute - Fr Khaled Anatolios
DESCRIPTION:On Monday 21st October\, the Oxford Thomistic Institute will be hosting Fr Khaled Anatolios\, of the University of Notre Dame\, to speak on: What does it mean to say that Jesus is Lord? The Witness of Nicaea. \nThe lecture will begin at 7.30pm in the Aula at Blackfriars\, and will be followed by refreshments. All are welcome. \nAbstract\nWhile there is a common inclination among contemporary Christians to locate the intelligibility of Trinitarian doctrine in creaturely analogies of three-in-oneness\, it is more profitable to seek that intelligibility as flowing out of a certain conception of the lordship of Christ. Fr. Khaled Anatolios will argue that the Nicene debates revolved around two rival interpretations of the lordship of Christ. To assent to the Nicene creed involves understanding how the Nicene interpretation of the lordship of Christ can be affirmed and enacted by Christ’s disciples in today’s world. \nThis lecture is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Aquinas Group
DESCRIPTION:The Blackfriars Aquinas Group is a reading group for young adults (18-35) to enrich their spiritual and intellectual lives by studying the writings of St Thomas Aquinas. This term we will look at the topic of Christology – the study of Jesus Christ\, the incarnate Word\, who is true God and true man. \nThe foundational and perhaps most outrageous claim of Christianity is that God chose to take on human flesh\, born from the womb of a virgin in a stable at Bethlehem. How can God\, the creator of all that is\, become a created human being? Was Jesus really God? Or\, we might ask\, was Jesus really human? And how does the Incarnation save us? Join us this term as we explore these questions with the help of Aquinas’ Summa Theologiae. We will begin with a couple of introductory sessions\, looking at the Christology of the New Testament and the patristics\, before turning to St Thomas. \nEach session will begin with a talk\, followed by time for questions and discussion. No prior knowledge or familiarity with St Thomas is expected.
