DESCRIPTION:The Blackfriars Aquinas Group is a reading group for young adults (18-35) to enrich their spiritual and intellectual lives by studying the Church’s teachings through the lens of St Thomas Aquinas. \nWe meet on most Mondays in term at 7pm\, in the Aula at Blackfriars. DESCRIPTION:On Monday 9th June\, the Oxford Thomistic Institute will be hosting Sir Gabriele Finaldi\, the Director of the National Gallery\, to speak on Visions of Heaven and Hell in Botticelli’s “Mystic Nativity”\, “The Wilton Diptych”\, and Bermejo’s “Saint Michael Triumphs over the Devil”. \nThe lecture will begin at 7.30pm in the Aula at Blackfriars\, and will be followed by refreshments. All are welcome. \nAbout the Speaker\nBorn in London in 1965\, Gabriele Finaldi studied art history at the Courtauld Institute of Art where he completed his doctorate in 1995 on Jusupe de Ribera\, the 17th-century Spanish painter who worked in Italy. He was curator at the National Gallery between 1992 and 2002\, where he was responsible for the later Italian paintings in the collection (Caravaggio to Canaletto) and the Spanish collection (Bermejo to Goya). In 2002\, he took up the position of Deputy Director for Collections and Research at the Museo Nacional del Prado\, Madrid. In 2015\, he was appointed Director of the National Gallery. \nHe has curated exhibitions in Britain\, Spain\, Italy\, and Belgium; and he has written catalogues and scholarly articles on Velázquez and Zurbarán\, on Italian Baroque painting\, on religious iconography\, and on Picasso.

DESCRIPTION:On Monday 26th May\, the Oxford Thomistic Institute will be hosting Dr Nuno Castel-Branco\, of All Souls College\, to speak on Holy Corpses: Incorrupt Bodies and Early Modern Science. \nThe lecture will begin at 7.30pm in the Aula at Blackfriars\, and will be followed by refreshments. All are welcome. \n \nAbstract\nThis talk examines how incorrupt bodies of saints\, like those of Philip Neri and Francis Xavier\, intertwined with anatomical science. It challenges the presumed antagonism between devotion and scientific inquiry. It does so by arguing that the Church’s engagement with these “holy corpses” was tied to the emergence of human dissections and anatomical advancements in the Italian Renaissance. \nAbout the speaker\nNuno Castel-Branco is a historian of science\, culture\, and religion in early modern Europe and its global expansion. He completed his PhD in the history of science at Johns Hopkins University in 2021 after obtaining an MSc in Physics from the University of Lisbon. He is currently a Research Fellow at All Souls College\, Oxford. In the past\, he has worked at Harvard University’s Villa I Tatti (Florence)\, and at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science in Berlin. His first book\, ‘The Traveling Anatomist’\, on Nicolaus Steno\, is under contract with the University of Chicago Press. His articles have been published in Annals of Science\, Early Science and Medicine\, and Renaissance Quarterly\, among others. He also writes for a broader audience and his essays have appeared in the Wall Street Journal and Scientific American. \nMore information can be found on his website.

DESCRIPTION:On Monday 3rd March\, the Oxford Thomistic Institute will be hosting Prof. Michael Hurley\, of Trinity College\, Cambridge\, to speak on The Theological Poetics of Gerard Manley Hopkins SJ. \nThe lecture will begin at 7.30pm in the Aula at Blackfriars\, and will be followed by refreshments. All are welcome. \n \nAbstract\nAn eccentric and obscure Victorian priest\, unremarkable by any worldly measure\, Gerard Manley Hopkins (1844-1889) taught himself to make words sing\, and bite\, and cry out as no writer before him\, or any writer since. This lecture will survey his remarkable achievement as a poet with an emphasis on how his poetics was informed by his religious faith: how\, through the writing of poetry\, he sought to express but also to explore\, understand\, and reconcile the fierce extremes of his spiritual experience and temper\, swinging between ecstasy and despair; how no one would publish him in his lifetime – “dared not”\, he once quipped to this mother – but how\, some thirty years after his death\, his poems suddenly found a devoted readership that has only continued to grow in the subsequent century\, so much so that he is today widely regarded as one of the finest poets in the English language. \nAbout the speaker\nMichael D. Hurley is Professor of Literature and Theology\, and a Fellow and Director of Studies at Trinity College. Educated at the Universities of Cambridge (PhD) and St Andrews (MA)\, he has taught at Cambridge since 2005. He was a Visiting Scholar at Harvard in 2009\, a Visiting Fellow at All Souls College\, Oxford\, in 2021\, and a Visiting Professor at the Sorbonne in 2024. Alongside his academic work\, he frequently gives talks and public lectures on the philosophical and theological questions posed by art and literature. He is a contributor to the BBC Radio 4’s Thought for the Day on the Today programme\, with recent episodes on the topics of beauty\, gratitude\, ancestors\, creation\, relics\, fighting\, euthanasia\, reality\, humour\, discrimination\, and service. DESCRIPTION:On Monday 17th February\, the Oxford Thomistic Institute will be hosting Fr Isaac Morales OP\, of Providence College\, to speak on The Christ-Shaped Call of Baptism\n \nThe lecture will begin at 7.30pm in the Aula at Blackfriars\, and will be followed by refreshments. All are welcome. \nAbstract\nSt. Gregory Nazianzen once described baptism as “the most beautiful and most magnificent of the gifts of God.” By contrast\, many Christians today rarely give a thought to their baptism. This talk will elucidate the beauty of this sacrament\,which lies at the center of Christ’s mission and of every Christian vocation. By considering some of the biblical images of baptism\, we will come to a better appreciation of the magnificent gift the Lord has given us and its implications for our lives. \n \nAbout the Speaker\nFr. Isaac Morales\, O.P. was born and raised in the northern suburbs of Chicago. He has a BSE in civil engineering from Duke University\, an MTS from Notre Dame\, and a PhD in New Testament\, also from Duke. From 2007-2011 he taught as a layman in the theology department at Marquette University. In 2012 he joined the Order of Preachers (aka\, the Dominicans) and was ordained to the priesthood in May\, 2018. He has taught at Providence since August of the same year. He is the author of The Bible and Baptism: The Fountain of Salvation (Baker Academic Press\, 2022).

SUMMARY:Aquinas Group
DESCRIPTION:The Blackfriars Aquinas Group is a reading group for young adults (18-35) to enrich their spiritual and intellectual lives by studying the writings of St Thomas Aquinas. \nWe meet on Mondays in term at 7pm\, in the Aula at Blackfriars. We begin with a light meal\, then read and discuss the texts guided by one of the friars\, before finishing by praying Compline (night prayer) together in the priory church. This term we will look at the basic and fundamental principles of Catholic theology. \nWe will explore topics such as the nature of Divine Revelation\, the inerrancy of Sacred Scripture\, the possibility of miracles\, and Marian devotions and doctrines. \nEach session will begin with a talk\, followed by time for questions and discussion. No prior knowledge or familiarity with St Thomas is expected.
